Bills vs Ravens

Bills vs Ravens: Sunday, September 9, 1:00p ET CBS Fox USA Today. The preseason is half over. To this point, the Buffalo Bills have remained relatively healthy.

Their Week 1 opponent, the Baltimore Ravens, cannot say the same.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Ravens will be without tight end Hayden Hurst on Sept. 9 when Baltimore hosts Buffalo after Hurst suffered a stress fracture in his foot.

Hurst was one of two first-round picks (No. 25 overall) for the Ravens during the 2018 NFL draft. The other, quarterback Lamar Jackson, will likely not play as well. He’s currently backing up starting QB Joe Flacco.

Hurst’s injury comes just two days after the NFL suspended Baltimore’s top cornerback, Jimmy Smith, for four games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Buffalo starts their season with five of their first seven games on the road, including their first four games against strong opponents in the Ravens, Chargers, Vikings and Packers, respectively. Only the Chargers meeting is in Orchard Park. With that tough start on the horizon, beginning the season with a win against the Ravens could be key.

Through three preseason games for the Ravens, who also played in the Hall of Fame Game, Hurst has five receptions for 41 yards and touchdown.

Louisville vs Alabama

Louisville vs Alabama: latest national title Saturday at 8 p.m. ET when they face the Louisville Cardinals at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. Alabama is a 24.5-point sportsbook favorite and the over-under for total points scored is 62. Before you make any Alabama vs. Louisville picks, listen to what SportsLine senior analyst Josh Nagel has to say. A Nevada-based expert with 20 years of experience in the sports wagering industry, Nagel has hit 60 percent of his bowl picks over the past two seasons. He came on strong at the end of last year with an undefeated run on his spread selections in the College Football Playoffs.

Nagel knows the Crimson Tide won their fourth national title this decade in dramatic fashion in January when they scored a walk-off touchdown in overtime for a 26-23 win over Georgia. Although there’s little doubt they have the talent to win back-to-back titles, Alabama starts the season with a quarterback controversy.

Just because Alabama has been dominant doesn’t mean it can cover a three touchdown-plus spread. Louisville’s new quarterback, Jawon Pass, has the attributes of a pro-style pocket quarterback, the likes of which coach Bobby Petrino has preferred during his tenure. The 6-4, 230-pound sophomore went 23 of 33 for 233 yards and two touchdowns last year in limited action behind Lamar Jackson, who’s now in the NFL.

Austin Peay vs Georgia

Austin Peay vs Georgia:Saturday’s season opener at home against Austin Peay, but nonetheless there is intrigue on who last season’s national runner-up will deploy under center. Sophomore Jake Fromm, who directed the Bulldogs to the SEC championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff title game as a freshman, has worked with the first-team offense, but highly recruited freshman Justin Fields likely will see playing time.

The more pressing need is behind the quarterback, where Georgia must replace Sony Michel and Nick Chubb – who combined for 8,407 career yards and 77 rushing touchdowns – but has plenty of depth in sophomore D’Andre Swift, and juniors Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien.

I think the game will dictate how we get to play those guys,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart told the media Monday, refusing to name a starter at quarterback or any position. “I don’t know how that’s going to come out. There’s no plan, ‘this is when he’s going to play’.”

Georgia allowed only 16.4 points per game a season ago and while it lost its trio of starting linebackers, the secondary is led by All-American defensive back Deandre Baker. The Bulldogs, who fell in overtime to Alabama in the national title game, play four of their first six games at home, including home dates with Austin Peay and Middle Tennessee State in the season’s opening three weeks.

Furman vs Clemson

Furman vs Clemson:Gets started Saturday, September 1, Clemson is facing the opponent against whom the team played its first game in program history. Guided by Head Coach Walter Riggs, Clemson earned a 14-6 road victory against the Furman Purple Hurricane in the Tigers’ gridiron debut on Oct. 31, 1896.

Clemson is looking to win its 31st consecutive contest against Furman and extending its unbeaten streak against the Paladins to 32 consecutive games. The last tie between the two teams occurred in 1937, and the most recent Furman victory in the series came during the 1936 campaign. Clemson’s 30-game winning streak against Furman is its longest active winning streak against any opponent.

Nine starters, led by senior All-SoCon safety Aaquil Annoor (64 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2 FF), sophomore linebacker Elijah McKoy (81 tackles, 1 FF), and redshirt senior All-SoCon nose guard Jaylan Reid (45 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 2 sacks) return off a defensive unit that paced the SoCon in sacks (34) a year ago.

Eagles vs Falcons

Eagles vs Falcons:Thursday, September,8:20p ET NBCPederson said Tuesday he’ll know by the end of the week whether Carson Wentz is healthy enough to play in the regular-season opener against Atlanta on Sept. 6.

Wentz, who will not play in Thursday’s preseason finale against the New York Jets, has been splitting reps with Foles in practices the last week, according to Pederson, but has not yet been cleared for contact by the team’s medical personnel.

Some think he will play against the Falcons. Others believe he will sit out that game and make his season debut at Tampa Bay on Sept. 16. NBC analyst Peter King has suggested Wentz will miss the first three games.

Me, personally, I will know by Friday,” Pederson said before practice at the NovaCare Complex. “Otherwise, it will be (announced) 90 minutes before kickoff.”

He was always involved in 7-on-7s, and his arm, I’ve made comments that his arm was live, and he was making some really, really nice throws,” Pederson said. “Then when he came back into the 11-on-11s, one of the noticeable changes again, or differences, was just his lower body strength and how well he’s progressed through his rehab and conditioning.

The Minnesota Vikings, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins, meet the Denver Broncos, led by quarterback Case Keenum, in an NFL preseason game on Saturday, August 11, 2018 (8/11/18) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado.

Chris Harris Jr. is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. For the first time in his eight-year NFL career, he’s actually the top cornerback on his own team.

Harris has played alongside Champ Bailey, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Aqib Talib during a stellar career that began with him as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas and includes three trips to the Pro Bowl and two All-Pro honors to go with a Super Bowl ring.

The Broncos traded Talib, whom Harris first played with in college, to the Los Angeles Rams in a cost-cutting move this offseason, ending the duo’s four-year run together in Denver and thrusting Harris into a new, leading role.

Now, he’s not only being asked to lock down opponents’ top receivers but serve as the unquestioned leader at his position.

He’s handling those responsibilities “really well in my opinion,” coach Vance Joseph said. “As a leader, I’ve been really impressed with Chris. He’s grabbing those guys and leading those guys in the back end. He’s helped (Bradley) Roby a lot this training camp. Chris is a very, very smart player, so he helps our guys with the football IQ part of the game. He can really explain football. He understands football. I’ve been pleased with him. He’s playing good and he’s also leading well for us.”

Lions vs Raiders

New Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden isn’t the only first-year head coach in the league this season. Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia is also in his first season and the two new coaches will meet Friday night (7:30 p.m. PT/10:30 p.m. ET) as both teams open their preseason schedules.

Lions vs Raiders NFL Game. Lions-Raiders joint practice Day 2 observations: Fights, Ragnow’s revenge and DB struggles. After a day in which the Detroit Lions looked like the better team against the Oakland Raiders in Tuesday’s joint practice, the home team looked to bounce back on Wednesday. For the most part, they succeed.

Patricia, the former defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, takes over from Jim Caldwell. Caldwell who was fired after the Lions failed to earn a playoff berth and finished with a 9-7 record in 2017, but he guided the Lions to two playoff berths during his four seasons in Detroit.

The hiring of Gruden gives Raiders fans hope the team can turn around their fortunes after last year’s turbulent season (6-10 in 2017). Former coach Jack Del Rio was fired and owner Mark Davis finally convinced Gruden to return to his old stomping grounds (Gruden was the Raiders coach from 1991-2001).

Gruden, who has not coached since he was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, comes to Oakland with plenty of question marks. Does his in-your-face personality still resonate with today’s players, or will they simply tune him out? The game has changed considerably since 2008 and there is a question of whether his style will work in 2018.

You can watch the live stream of the game on NFL gamepass.

Hammer has an interesting observation about this game. “Detroit is looking for a running back and Matt Patricia is looking to build a defense,” he told SportsLine. And for the Raiders, Friday’s game marks the return of Jon Gruden out of the broadcast booth.

In last week’s Hall of Fame Game, Hammer told SportsLine readers to grab Chicago +2.5 points. The result: The Bears covered, nearly winning outright in a 17-16 loss. Anyone who tailed Goldberg won with ease.

Now, Goldberg has studied the matchups for Lions vs. Raiders, noticing a key X-factor you didn’t even consider, and he’s again sharing his strongest picks over at SportsLine.

Before you make any bets or picks for Friday’s Detroit Lions vs. Oakland Raiderspreseason NFL game at 10:30 p.m. ET, you need to hear what Hammerin’ Hank Goldberg has to say. The legendary Vegas handicapper enjoyed a 17-year ESPN run in which he had only two losing seasons picking NFL games. Last year, Hammer competed against 10 top handicappers in the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s NFL Challenge and beat them all, finishing 50-29-6 against the spread.

Goldberg is well aware that the Lions don’t expect to play Matthew Stafford more than two series. Expect to see a determined Jake Rudock make the most of his time under center after falling behind Matt Cassel for the No. 2 spot at quarterback. New acquisition LeGarrette Blount isn’t expected to see much action either. Instead, look for Auburn rookie running back Kerryon Johnson to establish himself as Blount’s backup.
